SEQUEL TO JOY RIDES. DUNEDIN, May 12
A youth named Robert Henry Brockie pleaded guilty in the Police Court to charges of converting to his own use sums totalling £3(52, the property of bis employer. The accused, whose age is 1(5 years, was employed in a solicitor’s office and the trust moneys were given him to bank. He used about £IOO of the money which was spent in joy rides including one to Christchurch where lie was arrested. £lB7 was found in bis possession,- and some cheques and small amounts were also recovered. Accused was committed for sentence.
MAN AND HORSE KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. George Richard Wise, unmarried, aged 45 years, a farmer residing at Upper Fendalton, was killed at Hornby railway crossing today. Deceased was driving a spring dray loaded with potatoes, towards the Railway Station, ;uid apparently drove straight into the approaching, train, striking the seventh waggon from tips engine. Both inqii and horse were killed instantly.

SUPREME COURT CONVICTIONS. DUNEDIN, May 12. At the SiipryJiie Court, Thomas Henry Hot ton, aged 22, on a charge of forgery, uttering, and theft, was admitted to probation for a period of three years. John William Quan, who pleaded guilty to the theft of a watch and chain, was sentenced to three months’- hard labour and declared an habitual criminal. Charles James Ecclcs, for indecently assaulting- two men, was ordered tq lie detained for reformative i rentuieivt for. a term pot exceeding five years.
SAWMILL WORKER KILLED. INVERCARGILL, May 12. A buahmaii named Thomas J. Cook, employed at Grove Bush sawmill, was struck on the head by a falling branch this morning. He worked for three •hours, when lie complained of a severe pain and lay down. Me appeared very ill and an ambulance was summoned, but Cook expired on the journey to Invercargill. HEALTH RESTRICTIONS REMOVED CHRISTCHURCH, MAY 13. The Health Department’s sanctions imposed on account of influenza were removed to-day. The schools ‘reopen on Monday. OUR SUGAR SUPPLY. WELLINGTON, May 12. It has been known for some time that the Government made some agreement with the representative of the Colonial Sugar Refining Coy., who eamo to this country ou purpose- lo confer with the Government here on the matter, lor the supply of sugar to this country after tlm expiry of the-''current agreement on Juno 30th next, Mr Massey stated to-day that the New Zealand Government had purchased from the Company the Fiji crop of sugar, but the agreement bad not been signed. AL lie could say in the meantime was that a supply of sugar to New Zealand was assured for twelve months from June 30th. Mr Massey said that lie would, publish all the details in due course.
REFUSED TO GIVE EVIDENCE. May 21. In the Supreme Court, Gladys Batchelur.'was charged with counselling or procuring James 1 (cynojds Payne to commit a crime j also with conspiring and further- with permitting.
The Crown Prosecutor said that this girl had refused to give evidence, and in that refusal, she was technically right, ,since by giving evidence against, others she would be incriminating her self. It was in order that her mouth .might be opened, and that she migni be made to speak as to what had happened, that she was non' prosecuted. The jury returned, a verdict -fl plltjf on the third count only.
