LATE LOCALS.

In connection with the electric light display to-night, there is a possibility that it may be necessary about 8.45 p.m. to shut off the power for three minutes.

There passed away last week, at his residence, Richmond. Nelson. Mr Nathaniel Suckling, a highly esteemed pioneer Canterbury resident. The late Mr Suckling arrived in Lyttelton 61 years ago, and engaged in: business lor a time in Timaru and in Christchurch. He then entered into partnership with his brother, the late Mr John Suckling, as boot manufacturers ’and importers. He was a most popular business man, well known on the West Coast, and was much appreciated for his sterling qualities. He was an active member of the firm until 16 years ago, when he retired on account of bis health, anrt went to reside in Nelson. He leaves a widow, four sons, and six daughters to mourn their loss.

The growth of business of the Public Trust Oifice during recent years, particularly during the period just- closed, has been considerable,” said the lion J. G. Coates, Minisje.r-in-Cluuge, to a Wellington “.Post” reporter on Saturday. The, net profit for the year ended March 31st last, the Minister stated, was approximately £78,000, being an increase of £15,00(( in comparison with last year’s figures. The opening of new branches and a consequent further judicious extension’ of the operations of the office to meet the needs of the public would, i.io doubt, Mr Coates added, make the returns for the next financial period show a still greater increase over that at present reached.
