The Union Company’s collier Koromiko arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning from Newcastle, after the roughest trip -she has yet experienced. She left Newcastle at . midday on Friday, April 23rd., and on Saturday ran into the gale. On Sunday morning th 0 25th the gale had increased to a hurricane and the vessel* 1 was shipping seas fore and aft. About 6 a.m. a link in the steering chain broke, and the vessel lay helpless for two hours while a new ono was fitted. Monday saw the hurricane even worse than on the previous day, and as the vessel seemed to ho travelling in the path of a cyclonic disturbance she was hove to for .12 hours. During this time the vessel was rolling and shipping seas continually The waves were estimated at 60 feet from base to crest and a liberal coating of salt up to the top of tlie vessel’s funnel is evidence of the severity of the gale. On Tuesday the weather moderated slightly and some progress was made, although the vessel was still running in a- heavy beam sea. On Wednesday the steering chain again carried away, and the vessel was again hove to while repairs were effected. The wind getting easier, the Koromiko made Cook Strait and had a fair wind for the ! remainder of the journey to Lyttelton.
