SAD SUICIDE. EKETAHUNA, May 5,
Irene Daisy Stephenson, wife of W. Stephenson, a returned soldier and settlor at Tiraumea, suicided yesterday morning by shooting. At the iiu quest a verdict was returned of self iniljcted while of unsound'mind following influenza.
MOTORISTS’ UNION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 5.
At tjie first annual meeting of t|ie South Island iVfotor Union, Mr F. W. Johnston, who was elected President, said that thougji tjiey had broken away from the New Zealand Union, they need not bo at enmity with tjiat body. Whatever little unpleasantness that might have pccurec} w}iep they broke away, would, lie hoped spoil lip healed.
A motion affirming tlio principle that motorists ho licensed annually by the Goverippont and Dipt power be given to suspend such licenses, was carried. The Secretary was instructed to write to tlie New Zealand Association,. stating that the South Island Body was willing to work with them for the. benefit of piotorists.
It was decided to protest to the Minister of Internal Affairs against tlie bye-laws passed by a certain County Council, and to request that any future by-laws in tlie Sou ill Island be referred to tlie Union before being approved by the Minister.
FATAL A CGI PENT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 5
John Charles Mann, aged 53, a farmer of Springfield was crushed between a dray-load of wheat and a railway truck at Springfield to-day. He was brought in to the Christchurch Hospital, but succumbed to bis injuries.
COAL TAR PRODUCTS. WANGANUI, May 2
At-a meeting of the Wanganui Borough Council some of tlie councillors received a surprise when they learned that the council actually sold its raw tar to a local company at 5Jd per gallon, and bought hack the distilled production at 101 d per gallon. In addition it had to use its own plant to puinp the raw tar into tlio company’s vats. It >s now proposed that the council mstal its own distilling plant, and secure lor itself some of the profits the company lias been making from the sale of by-pro-ducts manufactured from the council s own tar.
OBITUrvKA. DUNEDIN, May 5
The death is announced of Dr Win. Allen, of Mosgiel. The deceased in the eighties was well known as an interprovincial ltugby half-back.
CARGO PILFERING. WELLINGTON, May 5. A watersider, Joseph Henry Beck, was sentenced at the police court, .to-day to six montlw’ imprisonment oil a charge of stealing articles lrom the cargo of vessels in port.
