The Canterbury Hospital Board is finding the hospital maintenance veryheavy, the increase in the cost per head in 1919-20 as compared-with 1914-15, be ing £4O 8s at the hospital, £3B 16s at the .sanatorium, apd £B6 6s at tlip infectious diseases hospital. The total cost of maintenance of Christchurch Hospital was £49,884 as against £lB,894 six years earlier. In the intervening period the number of patients rose from 205 to 376, but this increase' does not nearly account for the great advance in the aggregate cost. Tile chairman, (Air Howell), therefore raised tile question whether the maintenance rate charged to patients should not be increased from the present amount, Os per day, to Bs, those who could not afford to pay continuing, of course, to receive free treatment as hitherto.

A very old and respected resident of the West Coast'in the person of Frederick Hambrook, died yesterday morning *at the residence of Airs Annie Brown, Mursden lload, Greymouth. Deceased who was 78 years of age bad been in failing health for some time and was an out-patient of the Grey River Hospital. The defendant company, for whom Air Olli-vc-r appeared, denied liability, alleging that its duty was merely to consign the article to the plaintiff at Woxtpof. The plaintiff’s contention was, that the evidence of the defendant’s witnesses at Hokitika showed that tho Company was requested to undertake the transport of the machine to its destination and tli at no directions were given to the company as to what route or means of• conveyance should he adopted and that as the company, which is a common carrier, accepted the machine without stipulating that it was accepting it in the capacity only of a forwarding agent, therefore in accepting the machine, must, in the circumstances, be held to have accepted it as a carrier, and not as a forwarding agent. After hearing argument as to the law on tliis aspect of the ease, as well as the question of damages, the Magistrate reserved judgment,
