The bank rate is seven per cent. A PRESSMAN HONORED. LONDON, April 15. Lord Atholstan, Chairman of the Imperial Press Conference in Canada, was tendered a luncheon at the Savoy in connection with the British newspaper proprietor conference by Lord Burnham (President), and the guests included the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Milner, Pearley, Sir T. MacKenzie, Fisher, High Commissioners, editors of magazines, and a hundred British Dominions newspapers. Lord Burnham in toasting Lord Atholstan, said he hoped the conference at Ottawa would continue the splendid work of the first conference for the general good of the
Empire. Lord Atholstan replying, said Britain was best able to state how the Press Conference would benefit the Empire. Ho was of opinion it would be even more profitable for the conference to result in increasing emigration than the lowering of press rates. Lord Milner, proposing the toast of Canada,'said the war had witnessed the rise of a new great power, destined with increasing influence in the councils of Empire. The World Press Con-, ference was most valuable in establishing a community of ideas, to which was attributable the marvellous way the whole Empire pulled together in th© hour of trial. In the absence of a common Council of Empire the moral unity of Empire would depend largely on the success of the Empire press, in evolving common stock ideas regarding future great problems.
