[PEII PRESS ASSOCIATION. COPYRIGHT.] REMANDED. PALMERSTON N., April 12. Harry Deeley appeared before Mr Stout S.M. at the Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with the murder of Mary Etheline Webby at Palmerston North about 17tli March. He was remanded for 8 days.

STATE ADVANCES. WELLINGTON, April 12. The Rt. Ho(} W. F. Massey states that the Government, through the State Advances Office authorised during the last quarter 478 applications, totalling £152,000 to settlers and workers for house building and completing the purchase of properties. Applications to a value of £206,000 have been received by the State Advances Office from 37 local bodies under the Housing Act, 1919. These are now being deal with.

iRAILWAYMEN MEET PREMIER. WELLINGTON, April 13. The Executive of the A.S.R.S. had a private interview with the Minister of Railways (Mr Massey) to-day. The discussion of the matters at issue between Society and the Department was . not concluded, and the interview will he resumed to-morrow. ENGLISH EMIGRANTS ARRIVE. WELLINGTON, A prill 12. 'The Corinthic, which arrived here on Saturday brought 120 nominated passengers. There were also on her 30 oversea settlement Imperial soldiers. The Tainui on tlie 2nd of April last brought 215 nominated passengers, also 35 Imperial ex-soldiers and 120 passengers nominated by tlie Ministry of Shipping, the War Office, and the Royal Air Force. The Imperial ex-soldiers are being sent out here by the Imperial Government quite independently of the decisions of the Dominion Government. Other ships are also bringing more nominated emigrant passengers. Mr Massey states that there are enough intending emigrants waiting in England to take up all the available lisipping space for the next six months. P. and T. OFFICERS’ VIEW. NELSON, April 12. At the largest meeting yet held of the Nelson branch of Post and Telegraph Officers Association, a resolution was passed “demanding an immediate re-adjustment and increase of salaries by at least thirty per cent to meet the daily increasing cost of existing—not to mention living.” The resolution also demanded that the war bonus bo paid forthwith, and concluded by saying that it was felt that the time had now come when the loyalty of the members of the Department must no longer be penalised to the detriment of their just, reasonable and legitimate claims.

PATRIOTIC FUNDS INVESTED. GISBORNE, April 12. Tlie Citizens’ Defence Committee lias decided to invest ten thousand of the patriotic funds in Borough Council debentures. TRAMWAYS DEFICIT. CHRISTCHURCH, April 12. The revenue account of tlie Tramway Board for the year ended March 31st., shows a deficiency of £1237 ns against a surplus of £2741 for the previous year. The earnings were £205.976; operating expenses £145, 960; and standing charges £6125. Tlie position is regarded as satisfactory, considering the wan-es increase, the cost of material and the trouble incurred. The deficiency is the first since the inception of the tramways.
