The AVaitnea leaves AVellington. on Thursday for tho Coast direct and then returns to'New Plymouth. Messrs M. Houston and Co. will sell by auction on Friday at 2.30. p.m. on the premises of Mrs Clerkin, Hall Street, the whole of her household fur : niturf) arid effects. A pleasant function took place at the Dalcfiejd Public Hall QU Friday March 26th,, when Mr H, J, Nightingale, who has been promoted to the pimrge of the Grey town District High school, was, with his wife, entertained by the settlers of the district and presented with valuable parting gifts. Mr J. Hodder, chairman of the School Committee, stated they had met together to say farewell to their esteempd friend and schoolmaster. Mr Nightingale had been amongst them for ejght or nine years and ho had proved a worthy citizen whp assisted in anything promoted for the welfare of the district. They were sorry to lose him, but they were grateful to know that luh removal meant promotion. At the last examination Air Nightingale had presented eight pupils for proficiency certificates and it was to his credit to say that all secured them. Airs Nightingale was also held in the highest esteem for her unstinted attention to those unfortunate enough to he stricken with illness. He had the pleasure, on behalf of the residents of the district in handing Air Nightingale a. solid silver tea sot, ns a mark of the esteem in which he and his wife were held. Air Standish endorsed the remarks of Afr Hodder. AirNightingale in responding thanked the people for tlictr Ivindl.v thought- and the speakers for their remarks. He referred to the intelligence of the pupils who had passed through the classes at Dalefield, and said it was a strange coincidence that the day was the celebration of his birthday. Those present then rose and sang “For They are .Tolly Good Fellows,” and cheers were given. Master Crosland next handed Airs Nightingale a handsome handbag as a gift from the school children. Afternoon tea was afterwards served, —Masterton ‘‘-Age,”’
