The Sailors’ and Firemen’s Union have already stopped work. The coastal traffic is at a standstill . The printers and technical staffs of several newspapers have also struckThe general strike will not affect the waterworks, hospitals, police, fire brigades, and co-operative-concerns. Tho democratic newspapers state the strikers’ demands include improved labour conditions, speedy convocation of Parliament, and the release of syndicalists.

Tbe King, replying to a deputation of co-operative trade unions, said he and his Ministers were endeavouring to solve the situation. Conferences were continuing, and he would eventually invite the co-operation of representatives of the workers.
