OKARITO HARBOR LEAGUE.

REQUEST FOR ENDOWMENT.

Mr T. E. Y. Seddou, M.P., has received the following reply from the Minister of Lands regarding the applimation made on behalf of the Okarito Harbor Improvement League for an endowment:

“Referring to your letter of the 16th. January last to the Hon. Sir William Herrics, which he has referred to me in which was enclosed an application from Mr John Schilling, lion, secretary to the Okarito Harbour Improvement League to have an area of 20,000 acres set aside ns a Harbour Endowment, I have to inform you that most of the Crown land in tile vicinity of Okarito comprises part of the National Endowment. There is, therefore, no power to set aside 20,000 acres of this land as a Harbour Board endowment. “I may mention that many requests have been received from Harbor Boards and other local authorities from time to time, but most of these have been declined.

“Great difficulties now stand in the way of setting aside endowments for local authorities as apart from the fact that the ares of Crown lands are rapid Iv diminishing, a large part of them comprises part of the National Endowment or are encumbered in this respect that the potential revenue therefrom is payable into accounts etc.”
