WESTLAND ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
The regular meeting of the Council of the above was held at the County Chambers last evening, a large amount of routine business being disposed of. It was resolved to vote £25 towards the clearing of Maliinapua creek, subject to the local bodies concerned contributing the quotas proposed Notification was received from the Tourist Department that the question of a road from South Hokitika road to the falls, Maliinapua creek, would he considered when the Estimates were being framed. It was decided to ascertain the cost of scrubbing the track to Mount Tuliua, and the erection of finger posts' to guide persons making the ascent. It was resolved unanimously to present a specially hound copy of tile view hook, “Beautiful Westland” to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, and the Secretary was instructed to make the necessary arrangements. Mottled Westland wood polished will be used for a light board cover.
A resolution was agreed to enquiring in respect to the cost of two pairs of Canadian geese to he brought over for breeding purposes.
In reply to an enquiry from the Bullcr district it was resolved to quote the former price for 50,000 trout ova, available at Hokitika railway station. Reference was made to the illicit shooting of deer and pigeons, as also the illegal taking of fish and opossums, and it was decided to communicate with the authorities on the matter; also to urge again the fairness of open seasons for pigeon shooting and the taking of opossums as the best means to control tho illicit traffic going on. The damage caused to the Kanieri Lake foreshore was complained of by a resident, and it was resolved to wait on the Commissioner of Crown Lands to enforce remedial measures or demand the removal of tiic weir which was the reputed cause of the damage. It was decided to press for immediate action in the matter.
The question of sawdust in streams was also brought up, and the Ranger’s report to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, was dissented from ns not disclosing the full position. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Commissioner and to press for satisfactory ac tion being taken to control tho nuisance without further loss of time It was resolved to offer one shilling per head for shag’s heads, and to advertiso accordingly. The removal of the telephone to Lake Kanieri accommodation house was approved, and it was decided to ask the Department to take action in tho matter at once.
The matter of improving Lake Kanicri road was referred to, and it was resolved to again urge a substantial grant for the work, and take every opportunity of bringing the matter under the notice of the Government. A number of acounts were passed for payment, and works referred to in the caretaker’s report were approved. A grant of £3 for extra work on tracks was voted to the caretaker. It was decided to secure a supply of paint for buildings etc
