COAL POSITION IMPROVING. CHRISTCHURCH, March 17. The coal position is improving. .Mr Wiliam Reese, who has returned front the West Coast, says that the output is increasing and the men working well. The Welsh miners are now at work, said Mr Reese, and after getting used to tlie different conditions, will settle down without trouble. The daily output at Westport-Stockton mine towards the end of the low period was under 400 tons; last week the average was 575 per day, or 3453 tons in all This is a distinct improvement and one that is partly due to the extra men working and partly to the end of the “go-slow” policy. Of course it is ex.pected that it will take some little tftne before things are fully adjusted.

Representations made to the Minister of Public Works by the Otago branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union in con nection with wages and conditions of public works employees on day labour, asking to be placed in a position conforming with that of the town workers regarding the purchase of goods or an increased wage was as compensation for country prices.

The Minister replied that the .question of increasing wages cannot he dealt with piecemeal, but the question as a wlidle was being considered by Cabinet.
