ANOTHER PROTEST. ASHBURTON, This Day. ' A mass meeting, comprising the three Societies of railway employees, was held last evening, when the following resolutions were carried:— “That we place on record our entire dissatisfaction with Mr Justice Stringer’s report, and consider Is absolutely inadequate to meet the ever increasing cost of living; we demand an all round os increase per day. We also pledge ourselves to support the Executive in any drastic action they may deem necessary to achieve this result. Further, we demand a reply to our request within seven days. That this meeting protests against spending public money in entertaining tlie Prince of Wales in view of the fact that Government had failed to grant their employees a living
wage, and we refuse to participate in the celebrations.” j * j COAL BUNKER AFIRE. j AUCKLAND, This Day. J A fire broke out in a spare bunker on the steamer Admiral Codrington, at the central wharf. Water was pumped on the burning coal and part of the coal in the bunker was discharged till two men were overcome by the fumes, after which electric fans were used to clear away the fumes. The coal is now being discharged and a hose is being played on the quantity remaining in the bunker. No further danger is , anticipated.
