INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC

POSITION AT RUNANGA. Information recieved from Runanga last night,‘conveyed the news that nine fresh cases were notified yesterday, some of which are fairly serious. 'The slight abatement reported on Wednesday has not improved and the position is now little changed. Many of the earlier patients are now convalescent, but the danger of a spread of the disease is by no means passed. A strict supervision of people leaving and entering the townships-• is still maintained, and the activities of all who are combating the disease arc still being tested. HEALTH OFFICER’S ATTITUUDE. , ,CHIRISCRURCH, March 4. Tlio District Health Officer in Christchurch states he has not (at 5 p.m. today received any further reports of influenza cases at Runanga and that the information sent him is that the outbreak there is abating. He says be hopes the township has completely passed through its crisis, and that it will be convalescent by the end of the week Tire Health Officer also states 'hat there is no need for great alarm on account of the Runanga- outbreak Other outbreaks in similar country centres have occurred in Otago for a fairly long time, the malady springing up in isolated places without warning.
