ADRIATIC QUESTION
(By Electric Telegraph— Copyright.;
WASHINGTON March 2
•I he United States State Department has published the Jugo-E’ev reply to the Anglo-French memorandum of January 14th, regarding the Adriatic. The Jugo-Slavs accept, in principle, the independence of Fiume, but demand that Baross be given to Jugo-Slavia. Tiie reply points out that any further .reduction of their territory would be a. flagrant violation of principle of nationalism and would create a hot-bed of “irridentism,” for agitation for its recovery in Jugo-Slavia. The Jugo-Slavs do not insist that Zara be placed under JugolSlav sovereignty, but they cannot admit that Fiume and Zara have the right to use their own diplomatc renresentatives, pointing out that if this choice lay with Italy it would amount to annexation.
Regarding Albania, the Jugo-Slavs sav the best solution would he to confine the administration thereto to a local autonomous Government, without interference by foreign Powers.
