WESTLAND WAR MEMORIAL
COMMITTEE MEETING
A joint meeting of the Memorial and Finance Committees appointed at last week’s public meeting to draw up a report for the consideration of a further public meeting to-decide in regard to the design and site of the proposed Westland War Memorial, was held at the County Chambers last night These were present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor) jn the chair, Mrs Moore, Messrs Breeze, Preston, F. Mclntosh, Andjijewes, Stewart, Wild, Brunton, Bruce, Maefar’ane, Wells, Coulson and 'Evans. Apologies were made for the absence of Mr J, A. Valentine, and Hon. H. L. Michel, M.E.C. The Mayor explained the object and business of the evening, and the matters brought up were discussed from various points of view’. The following business was transacted:
Mr Wild moved: “That it be a recommendation to the public meeting that the proposed memorial take the form of a ‘non-utilitarian design. Mr Preston second. Carried.
Mr Wild moved: “That it be a suggestion to the Hokitika Borough Conn, cil to include suitable recreation, rooms for the Returned Soldier Association in the proposed new Town Hall.” Mr Stewart seconded. Carried. The Mayor moved: “That the site for tho war memorial be selected oh Cass (Square.” Mrs Moore seconded. Carried. On the question of suggested design the following proposals were brought forward: (a) Figure of Soldier on pedestal, to be carved by an Australasian sculptor, pedestal to be a pillar of greenstone. (bp A' (cenotaph with dome surmounted by a figure, and containing a greenstone pillar for record of names. (c) (An obilsk with record of names of fallen. The following inscription for the memorial was generally approved: “We lie Dead in many Lands “So that “You may Live here in Peace.'' Further suggestions in regard to the design and the inscription or dedication to be received at the public meeting for consideration. With regard to finance it was resolved to make an appeal for funds, the Committee to ad-range for the necessary collectipn in Westland County, and the four interior Boroughs. It was decided to arrange to lay the foundation stone on Anzac Day (Sunday, April 25th) the ceremony to be fitted in with the Soldiers’ Memorial service that day.
It was) (resolved to place on the memorial pillar the names of all native born Westlanders and all men who enlisted from Westland, who fell in the war. Mfefesre F. Mclntosh, Preston, Andrewes and Evans were appointed to compile the list and submit to a later meeting. In this connection it was reSolved to ask for information to be supplied as to the names and complete initials of the men who fed, so as to make the record a full one. It was decided that the names be recorded on the memorial pillar, in alphabetical order. It was resolved ti ask Base Records to assist in compiling the Westland record.
The foregoing report will be placed before a further public, meeting at the Town Hall next Monday night at 7.30. o’clock
