The Paeroa arrived at -Wellington yesterday and leaves there to-morrow for 'Hokitika. Owing to the increased price of coal, the Westport Borough Council is raising the price of gas from to-day. The thirty guarantors of the Chautauqua gatherings at Westport, were eaeli called upon to pay the sum of £5 Is Id to make up the deficiency. It is understood that the N.Z. Sports Protection League was instrumental in securing the second day permit for the Westport Jockey Club. The members,-.of the genera] and finance committees of he Westland War Memorial meet at the County Chambers to-night at 7.30 o’clock to take steps to prepare a report for a public meeting I next week, if possible, to decide definitely regarding the form and site of the proposed war memorial. A preliminary notice from Dalgety and Coy Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Ltd. appears in this issue, and notifies an important clearing sale of special stock at Upper Matakitaki, Murchison district ,on March 25th. The opportunity is a fine chance for settlers stocking their farms, in respect to stock or implements. “I believe that the price of woollen goods is a scandal,” remarked Lieut. Colonel G. Mitchell, M.P., during a com plimentarv function at Wellington South “and I think the Government should step in and protect the people.” Whether profiteering was going on or not, he said, did not matter so much as the fact that the people believer it was goincr on, and he believed that such was the case. He instanced having bought some knitting wool at 14s per Ib, and this only cost Is 6d to the farmer. “Who gets the difference?” he asked. “It is high time,’ ’ he urged, “that some commission was set up by the Government to properly go into the question.” Lieut. Colonel Mitchell also suggested that consumers’ committees might' be formed, similar to those in Paris, which have brought’ down the price of food- ■ stuffs by 50 per cent, within a week. ■ ' In the annual report of the Jubilee Institute of the Blind, there is the following paragraph of local interest:
“The voluntary contributions show a falling off from last year, a result occasioned entirely through the influenza epidemic which swept the Dominion. Mr R. B. Miller, the Travelling Teacher and Collector, was a victim n't Wellington, being incapacitated for four weeks. We are glad to report that lie made good recovery, but it became necessary to omit the annual visits to Greymoutli, Hokitika, Reefton, Westjoort and Gisborne. Contributors in those districts were notified and invited to send their kind subscriptions direct. The result was very disappointing, and the Institute loses not only the contributions, but also the Government subsidy on the same. Amounts forwarded will he found noted in the Secretary’s List. Several others have been received since the termination of the financial year—too late to ho brought into this year’s account. We desire to express the earnest- hope that many of our friends in the districts named will be prepared to double their usual contributions which the Collector next calls upon them.” An ideal spirit for both sexes— WOLFE’S SCHNAPPS In a few days we shah be ready with the latest creations, personally selected in the large centres, when we "hope tc have the pleasure of your visit 1o our emporium.
