CHAUTAUQUA

It is announced in this issue that Chautauqua is visiting Hokitika from February 13th to the 19th. Jluiing that- period there will be daily programmes, afternoon and evening in a huge marquee to be erected on Cass Square. Forty-eight years ago the people who spent their summer holidays camping upon the shores of Lake Chautauqua, in New York State, organised a huge summer gathering. Lecturers upon various subjects and from different parts of the world spoke to them, and musical artists were secured to entertain them. What a splendid combination of education and entertainment! The meetings were a great sucoe»s. The event became an annual institution. Chautauqua was born.
