FOOTBALL
TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA
' Australian '<fe N.Z: Cable Association) LONDON, Jan. 26. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) The Northern Football Union lias selected for the tour: —H. Wagstalf, J. Rogers, D. Clarke of Hudderfield). E. W. Jones, J. Bowers (of Rochdale Hornets). Jones is the most brilliant stand off half. The pack are now playing in ‘England. Wagstalf captains the team.
The selectors’ task is most difficult owing to the number of men nominated including 60 forwards, who require much watching, as never in tho history of the Northern Union have there been so many brilliant forwards. W.‘ Batten, the famous Hull threequarter, was invited to play in a trial match, but declined, contending that lie ought to have been chosen outright. Meanwhile a difficulty has arisen over passages. r Jhe intention was that the tieam should travel by itho Orsova, .leaving on April 3rd, but the Union is now informed that the Commonwealth has commandeered all accommodation, and the Union lias been requested to wait for'a new boat leaving on the I.4th.
The committee is considering tlio New South Wales’ proposal to make a world tour, but the impression is that tho Union is unlikely to accede, owing to tho short) notice.
