A cable from the Secretary of State for the Colonies has been received by Lord Liverpool, Governor-General, informing him that His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of an extension of His Excellency’s term of office, in order that he may be in New Zealand when the Prince of Wales visits the Dominion.
MUNICIPAL POLLS. TE AW'AMUTU, Jan. 21. A poll of the ratepayers to-day gave decisive majorities for the following loans:—£10,000 for municipal housing, and £2,500 for acquisition of a site for war memorials and a Town Hall.
SECOND-HAND RIFLES. WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. For some time the sale of secondhand rifles to rifle clubs members at a nominal price has been suspended, owing to the exigencies of war and defence. The authorities have now resumed the sales, which are expected to enable many more competitors to get practice for the big meeting at Trentham in March.
