ARAHURA VALLEY SPORTS.

The annual sports and picnic gathering was held at Arahura on Wednesday last. There was a large and representative gathering including visitors from as far a-field as Kumara. The management Committee deserve credit for the arrangements they made to get through a large and varied programme in so short a time. The day, which was somewhat cloudy, proved excellent for the purpose. The proceedings commenced with various events for the children and each child left the ground the happy winner of a prize. In the chopping and sawing events, the judicious handicapping resulted in some close and exciting finishes. These events called forth very able competition, especially the “big” chop which revealed axemanship of a high order. The trophies donated by several gentlemen were greatly appreciated. A word of praise is also due to those ladies who were responsible for carrying out the refreshment arrangements. The results of the chief events are as follows: Local Chop, (Ist. prize £3, 2nd. £1). —R. Fluety 1, R. Harris 2.
