Senator Lodge, in a- statement, on the Treaty said“ President Wilson places himself separately on behalf of internationalism as opposed to Americanism. I had hoped that the Senate might agree to some compromise, and thus ratify this Treaty. President Wilson however, has made this an opportunity to place the treaty' before the people at the election a s he suggests. NEW YORK, January io.' Thje Democratic National Committee have held a dinner at which Mr W. J. Bryan, in a speech, said it would take too long before the Peace Treaty, could ibe made tlie issue at the next elections. “We cannot,” he said, “afford to take the responsibility for any futher delay. The world is waiting for the full ratification of the Peace Treaty.
PAPER SHORTAGE. OTTAWA, Jan. 11
Since the newspapers in the city of Winnipeg are threatened with early suspension owing to a dispute between the Government and some of the paper mills, the latter are defying the Government which orders them to 'furnish Winnipeg with paper at 80dol. a ton Paper can be sold in the United States at double this price, and the millers therefore refuse to sell at 80 dollars. The Government lias now stopped all the cars of papier destined for the United States.
Some millionaires propose to test the right of the Government to thus control paper.
SOVIETS IN MEXICO. (Received this day at 10.20 a.in ) WASHINGTON, Jan. 12. Evidence given before the Senate subcommittee, shows that thirty thousand men who escaped war service, when called up under the American draft system, are stirring up a Soviet revolution in Mexico. The Communist party in Mexico lias been exceptionally active lately.
