(P«u PKISSS ASSOCIATION. —COrYl’SUUfi ' WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. It is understood that the Railway .Department, in pursuance of an extensive housing scheme, has secured a large area of land at Kniwarra with the intention of laying out their railway employees’ settlement on modern townplanning lines.
MOTOR RECORD. AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. The Auckland Motor Cycle Sports Club held a successful meeting on Takapuna racecourse on Saturday. The crowd was treated to some thrills by Coleman, the Palmerston North crack, who established a world’s record on the grass in the Great Northern Championship, covering a distance of 15 miles 150 yards in 13 minutes dead. Coleman from a flying start, also broke the mile record on the grass, covering the distance in 49 3-'ssccs.
LABOR’S PROSPECTS. LONDON, Jan. 8, Mr Arthur Henderson, UP. (a •
bom - Leader), speaking at Widnes, dealt with Labour’s improving prospect. He said that Labour was not content to rest upon the results it had already achieved, nor was it going to be satisfied with any precarious alliance with any of the old Parties. Such an alliance would mean a compromise on Labour principles. These admitted of no compromise. It was not suggested, lie said, that Labourites in general, wore all fully equipped to discharge the functions of Government. But the same thing could be said of +ho other Parties. Nevertheless Labour now possessed men who are .trained in public affairs, and who are the intellectual equals of the representatives of other Parties.
ESCAPE FROM GAOL. AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. William Frederick Murray, alias Jackson who was serving sentence for thoft, escaped from Mt Eden Gaol on Saturday afternoon, presumably by scaling the wall. Murray entered a house, where he purloined a suit of civilian clothes leaving his attire in exchange. Ho has not been seen since. Murray had been declared an habitual criminal.
WAR LOAN. WELLINGTON, This Day. Sir James Allen states that satisfactory results have followed upon the enforcement of the compulsory clauses in connection with tho War Loan, and that Government is assured of getting the full amount of the loan. EMPIRE EXHIBITION. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Premier states the great Empire Commerce Exhibition, which is to he held in London, will probably open in May or June, l'J2l. Cabinet has not yet gone into the subject here, but Govern, ment has promised to give the project every assistance possible. Such an exhibition would be a good thing. It was to he hoped that matters industrial would he sufficiently settled down by then to ensure the success of the project. ... ... .....
