WESTLAND TROTTING! CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER GATHERING.

Tho annual meeting of the Westland Troting Club took place on the Hokitika racecourse yesterday, having been postponed from Tuesday of last week, owing to the interruption of the fixtures caused by Boxing Day’s heavy rain There was a very good attendance present, and the meeting passed off very pleasantly, there being no hitches throughout the day whatever. The races were run off promptly, the course was in capital order, though somwehat dusty, and the times recorded were good. The fields were not as large as they might have been, the withdrawals in several races being numerous. Speculation was brisk when the fields were off substantiay proportions, the sum of £7265 passing through the totalisator for the day as against £6885 for last meeting. The Cup supplied the largest dividend of the day while the race Was cub out in excellent time by that erratic starter Palmdale, who trotted very kindly and put up a fine performance. The last race of the day gave the best finish, tho three placed. horses coming down the straight in a line, a fine finish resulting. The champion pacer “Cathedral Chimes” gave an exhibition over one mile and put up a track record of 2mins 12secs., the first half being cut out in 1 min. 5 secs., and the'-second half ini Imin 7. secs. The owner-driver, (Mr J. Bryce), was heartily cheered at the conclusion of the exhibition, which was a capital one, the celebrated horse giving a fine clean run. He was paced by the racer Silver Shield, for the journey. After the event Mr F. McGregor, (President of the Club), heartily thanked Mr Bryce for bringing the horse across tho ranges, and for the splendid exhibition given. At his call three hearty cheers were given for the owner and three more for the horse.

The officials of the (Club were attentive to tlieir duties and had an easy task, tho gathering passing off in a most successful manner. The Town Band was present and played a choice musical programme during the afternoon. The booths appeared to he doing a steady trade and the afternoon passed to a very enjoyable conclusion. The following were the results: — DISTRICT HANDICAP, (saddle),

Harold Hue led past the stand the first time, but Princess Huon gradually made up the ground and at the turn came on to win by a length, Thornag© half a length away. Time 3.51 2-5. Tote £333. KANIERI HANDICAP, (harness) of £65, second to receive £lO and third ,£5 from slake; 1) miles. (2) Sal Pointer 12secs 1 (1) Carry On 16secs 2 (3) Captain Woodburn 12sec. 3

The only starters. Won easily by two lengths. Time 3.43 2-5. Tote £568. RIMU GOLDFIELDS HANDICAP (in saddle), of £65, second horse to receive £5 from stake; 1$ miles. (1) Rose Tracey lOsecs 1 (3) Belgian Lad osecs 2 (2) Inquisitive 4secs 3 Also started: (6) Fleetwing Msecs, (5) Westland Lass, Msecs; (4) Wireless Msecs. Rose Tracey went to the front from the start and won all the way, pass ing the post fifteen lengths in front of Belgian Lad, Inquisitive 8 or 10 lengths further away. Time 3.57 2-5. Tote £IOO3. Palmdale trotting in fine style took the lead and putting up capital time, won easily by five lengths, the favourite High .Admiral two lengths away. Time 4.49. Tote £llO4. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. (in saddle), of £6O, second to receive £lO and third £5 from stake; H miles. (3) Lady Somerset lOsecs. ••• 1 (1) Walter Raleign 15secs. .. 2 (4) Maryhill 15secs 3

Rose Tracey, 4secs; (9) Gallivant, 18secs. This was the best field of the day. Bloom and Gallivant led the wav from Romany Rye with Captain Rothschild making up his handicap. In the second round Gallivant dropped back and Bloom failed to last it quite out, Captain Rothschild winning by a length with Romany Rye two lengths away. Time 5.12 2-5. Tote £1179.

Wood],and Rose went away with a big. burst and soon had a commanding lead,- winning by three lengths, Lady Somerset two lengths away. 'Time 2.26 3-5. Tote £1097. FINAL HANDICAP.

Woodburn, 9secs; (4) Sal Pointer, 4secs. Kaweali led from Carry On to the entrance to the straight, when the three placed horses came down the straight in a lii<o and the best finish of the day resulted in Carry On securing the verdict by a neck with Kaweali third a neck away. Time 2.26 2-6. Tote £1137.
