A disastrous fire occurred in a wooden building in Trafalgar Street early this morning and resulted in the destruction of the premises of M. P. Webster’s (provision merchants), part pf Tratsen and Co., (drapers and milliners, and Shield and Co. (wine and spirit mpr chants). The Fire Brigade fought with great determination, but the flfunes having a good hold when discovered, spread rapidly in the wooden buildings. Webster is a heavy loser, no stock being saved. A. good deal was saved from Shields’ premises, Tratsen’s clothing and millinery devartment in brick build ings were saved, but the main building together with the ppserve stocks were totally destroyed. Tratsen’s loss ran into thqusanflfj. The qrigj# is a mystery. It is believed to have started near Webster’s premises. Insurances: —Tratsen’s stock £6,860, buildings £760; Webster, stock £6OO, buildings £600; Shields, building, £200; stock owned by Levin and Co , insurance is unavailable.
THE SUGAR SUPPLY. AUCKLAND, December 4. The Prime Minister stated to-day that by an arrangement with the head office of the Colonial Sugar Coy, an officer has been appointed by the Board of Trade to work in conjunction with the Company’s Manager in connection with the distribution of sugar as from to-morrow. Tbe proposed allocation of sugar will on a per centage basis, worked on the average requirements covering the last three years. The distribution will be as follows: —(1) household requirements; (2)essential industries.
The officer appointed for the purpose will assume the responsibility for a fair allocation of the sugar available, and an endeavour will also be made to overcome tbe difficulties of distribution occasioned by the uncertainty of coastal shipping. The Colonial Sugr Company anticipate being able to supply normal demands from now onwards, provided there is no interruption of. shipping. MOTOR OAK^AT'ALITY. MASTER'TON, January 4. A motor fatality is reported to have pocujrred on the road between Mt. Holdsworth and Carterton yesterday. Details are meagre but the car is said to have overturned and Mrs Hayes was killed outright.
FOUND DEAD. TIMARU, January 4.
A suicide is reported from Woodbury, where Oatford Matthew Burdon, aged 60 a well-to-do resident was found dead, in the bush with a revolver bullet wound in. the right temple. The revolver was found beside him. Deceased had been under the doctor for a nervous complaint and a search party this morning discovered the corpse. He leaves a widow and a grown up family of three.
