CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. GISBORNE, Jan. 1. The New Zealand Athletic, Cycle, and Motor-cycle Union Championship Meeting opened to-day under very favourable weather conditions, at the Park Racecourse. The attendance numbered about four thousand. This is the first championship meeting since the Auckland gathering in 1913, and competitors are present from all parts of the Dominion. The following are to-day’s results, all events being New Zealand championships unless otherwise stated. One lap is equal to one mile 79 yards:—
MOTORING CHAMPIONSHIPS New Zealand Heavy-weight Champion ship. Fifteen laps. P. Coleman (Palmerston North) 1 G. Gowell, (Gisborne) 2 L. Maugham (Palmerston N.,) .. 3 The only starters. Won by 400 yards. Time 14min. 48 l-sth secs. Poverty Bay Light-weight Championship. It. Jones (Gisborne) 1 W. Davy, (Gisborne), finished first, but was disqualified for crossing while turning a corner. Jones’s time was 6min. 30 2-s.secs.
