IRREGULAR MAILS.
TRADE HANDICAPPED
LONDON, Nov. 25. Many exporters who are trying to reestablish their Australian connexions support the renewed complaints from Sydney and Melbourne that the irregularity of the despatch and delivery uf mails is seriously handicapping business, and, coupled with the cable inefficiency is restricting trade . When asked, “Can wle not have a better service a year after the war,' ’ the Controller’s Department of the Post Office replied:—‘The transport of mails is still a sort of gamble. The tonnage Is insufficient, and we must continue using a ship here and there on the short est notice as offered.”
“Will the position improve, say, \>y June, 1920?” the exporters asked. The officials replied:—“That would be a sanguine forecast. It depends whether the Orient Company’s vessels arc supplemented. The P. and O. service still leaves a great gap.” The Department explains that the reduced ; use-of the trans-Pacific service is due to the irregularities of the Atlantis service, the American railway delays, and the difficulty of the Pacific steamprjj copnectipg vjtli Atlan.ic steamers. 1 Australia House has made very strong complaints on the subject.
