AMUSEMENTS

ALLAN WILKIE SEASON. THE SILVER KING. To-night at the Princess .Theatre Mr Allan Wilkie and Miss Frediswyde Hun-ter-Watts, the eminent English artists will make their first appearance to a Hokitika audience, supported by Mr Wilkie’s powerful dramatic company ncmhering thirty. It is many yea® since such a powerful combination has appeared in Hokitika, so it is quite safe to predict a packed house to-night. In the present representation, which is announced to take place at Princess Thoatre to-night by Mr Allan Wilkie’s Company, there is much to commend, for in the acting, the members of the caste give a splendid account of themselves, and the play has the additional advantage of an adequate staging. The work itself, moulded as it was by clever cratsmen, is not only full of vitality, but it contains many little touches of sympathetic observation, and the situations are extremely effective. The quality which attracts; one to the drama a second, and even a third time, is the ingenuity with which the scenes have been arranged. They follow each other in. such rapid succession that the interest of the story is sustained from the moment of the murder, towards the close of the first act right up to the final curtain. The characters, too, are capitally drawn. , .

Such novel stage* figures as “The Spider.” Jaikes and Elijah Coombs are seldom presented, while- it would he difficult to imagine a more lovable character than the dear old servant, whose loyalty to his Mistress is one of the many delights of the piece. Mr Allan Wilkie will appear as Wilfred Denver and Miss Frediswyde Hun--4-- Wo+.+.o nc Nellie Denver.

To-morrow evening Mr Wilkie will present another powerful melodrama, tho romantic costume play, “The Midnight Wedding.” Then on Monday next, last night of the season, will ho presented the dramatic version of Duma’s enthralling love story, “Camille.” Tho Box Plan is at Misses Mclntosh’s.
