Interest- has been excited somewhat by the case of a man who was sentenced to death at Chester in October for murdering a thirteen year old girl under revolting circumstances while drunk. The man appealed to the Criminal Court, which has reduced the charge to one of manslaughter, and has sentenced the accused to twenty years penal servitude, on the ground that the jury had been misdirected regarding tlie effect of drunkenness on a person's mental condition. The Crown has now appealed to the House of Lords. T!yi Attorney-General (Sir F. E. Smith), is going to argue for restoring the death sentence on the man. It is believed that such an appeal is unprecedented.
AFRICA’S MONSTER. LONDON, December 17. I Mr John Jordan, a big game hunter ! and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, has informed the “Daily Mail’’ that he encountered a brontosaurus on the Magori River, near Lake Victoria., in 1907, it had a lionlike head, walrus fangs, was eighteen feet in length, and was scaled with leopardlike spottings. He fired at the animal but it escaped. The natives are well acquainted with the brontorfauras. j They call it “Binoceke or Noquita.”
PRINCE OF WALES COMING. LONDON, December 16. The Prince of Wales announces that he will probably leave for Australia and New Zealand in March. UNITED STATES AND MEXICO. WASHINGTON, Dec. The Mexican Government in a reply to America, pointing out that Jenkins has been released expressed a hope that the incident was now ended. The reply was attacked in the Senate bv Senator Fall, who complained that the United States had first issued an ultimatum and then had opened debates with Carranza wh<? knew that ho might insult the United Sttes with im- . punity. The present administration ' Senator Fall declared “only seeks to proJ claim peace on earth and goodwill to bandits.”

The engineroom and bulkhead prevented the flames spreading forward from the afterholds, which are now flooded.
QUEENSLAND LOAN. (Received this day, at 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 16. _ The Queensland loan, is repayable in 1930-40. The newspapers give prominence to the statement in the prospectus that Queessland Government stock is domiciled in London, and is n ot subject to income tax, death duties, or succession duty in Queensland.
CHINESE DEMANDS. (Receivedthis day, at 9.30 a.m.) TOKIO, December 16. China ha s demanded thaf Japan apologises for the Foo Chow riots and despatch of Japanese warships thereto. The demands include the recall of the Tapanese Consul and punishment of formorans of Japanese allegiance for killing Chinese students and compensation to the latter’s relatives, the punishment of chief of police and prohibition merchants carrying arms. It is unlikely that Japan will comp’y, the authorities asserting the students were wholly responsible for the riots.
