Charlie Chaplin in “Shoulder Arms’’ , ,vas the main cause of the Princess Theatre being filled to the doors last night, this popular picture comedian being responsible for much merriment and amusement of the audience. The juveniles especially could not get enough of their popular screen idol. 'Replying to congratulations telegraphed from Hokitika, the Hon. W. F. Massey lias replied:—“Many thanks for your congratulation which, I warmly appreciate. The very best efforts of myself and my colleagues will be devoted to promoting the prosperity and happiness of the Dominion in the important period of reconstruction, upon which we have entered.” Tlie members of the State school branch of the Young Helpers’ League, (Dr. .Barnado), were on Saturday entertained at the residence of the secretary, Mr J. Brunton. Mrs Brunton and Mrs Hickson, the only Vice-Presidents able to be present, spared no effort to make the afternoon an enjoyable one for the young people. The collecting boxes were opened and yielded £l2. The most successful collectors were Bessy Houston £6 Os 4 id, Charley Collyer £1 4s 8d and -Frank Johnston 13s 3d. A proposal lias been mooted to invite Mr Jas Bryce to bring the aelebrated trotting horse, Cathedral Chimes, to Hokitika at New Year time for the purpose of giving an exhibition of trotting on the local track. As a. matter of fact Mr Bryce made an offer to this end when on the Coast last summer. .As, however, this season the race and trotting meetings are taking place here in the Christmas instead of New Year week, it will not be possible to have the exhibition at one of tlie local meetings The suggestion has been made to bold a special gathering here on Monday, January sth, and if the details can be arranged, to promote the exhibition for the benefit of the Westland Hospital way memorial wing. In order to discuss the matter, a joint meeting of the members of the racing and trotting clubs will be held to-night at 9 o’clock to see what arrangements could be made. Hanan) CountyClerk, on the information of Hugh Campbell Fletcher Audit Inspector was charged with misappropriating £•>', the property of the Grey County Council, between Ist day of February, 1919, and third day of December, 1919, also that on the first day of February, 1919, lie did misapropriate the sum of £43, property of the Grey County Council, and that lie did fraudulently convert the s ame to hjs own use. A statement made by the Audit Inspector was read in Court, detailing the auditing of the Council’s books. The wife of Mr John Penman, passed away at Westport on Wednesday. Deceased was a native of Scotland, and had resided in New Zealand for 37 years, a great part of that time at Denniston. She is survived by a sorrowing husband and thi<ee sons and three daughters.
At the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Thomas (Codings, ohargjed that on or about the Ist day of September, 1919, at Greymouth, he did attempt 55 unlawfully (supply to a young woman a certain noxious thing, knowing that such was intended to be unlawfully used with intent to procure a miscarriage was, on the request of Detective Ward remanded to December 23rd. A quiet but pretty wcaomg ««« i-c. brated at Holy Trinity Church, Greymoutli, on Wednesday, the contracting parties being Mr James Brimble, son of the late James Brimble, Turahama Street, and a member of the Borough Pumping Staff, and Minnie, daughter of the late James Stewart, Coal Creek. Miss Dumbleton acted as bridesmaid. Mr W. Evans was best man, and Mr A. Brimble groomsman. The nuptial knot was tied by the Rev. Canon Carr. The bride’s present to the bridegroom was a handsome cameo ring and the bridegroom’s present to the bride a gold wristlet watch. The young couple carry with them in their new life the best wishes of their many friends. Mr Robert ’Abcrne, whose death at tlie age of seventy-four years, occurred at Christchurch on Monday last, was a well-known personality in North Can-
terbury in the early days of the province. He came out to New Zealand in the sixties, and for a short time wa s employed as a stockman in the Oxford district. Subsequently he was engaged on the literary staff of the “Lytelton Times” for many years, and later engaged in journalism in Wellington and at Greymouth, and was for several years on the literary staff of the Greymouth Evening Star. While resident in Rangiora, the late Mr Aherne was a prominent* member of the ! Masonic Lodge, and was also secretary of the Rangiora Oddfellows’ Lodge and n Provincial Grandmaster of the Ashlev District Oddfellows’ Lodge. His many friends on the West Coast will regret to hear of his death.
