» tPfcL- PP.fiSH ASSOCIATION.— COP^MtOBt* 1 RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP. WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. The Rifle , Championship meeting is to be held at Trentham on March next. The programme provides for service teams matches, individual service match es and championships, a series of nine matches and several other competitions, including the King’s Prize. The total prize money will be £I6OO. Returned soldiers and sailors and senior cadets are prdvided ‘for as separate prizes have been allotted and a special cadet competition is fixed for Saturday 6tli March. Colonel Collins anticipates over 500 entries, for the meeting. Any 303 I magazine rifles issued from the Defence i .Stores or those of like pattern and subject to approval of the Executive, may be used. Match barrels are prohibited. The meeting will, commence on Thursday March 4tli and continue for a week. AN APPEAL ALLOWED. CHRISTCHtRGE, Nov. 22. At the Supreme Court, before Justice Herclman, Williahl Wliitear* sipfrealed against the decisiibti. of' Mi* Rolling ß S.M., ordering him to pay twelve guineas to Dr. O’Brien, a throat specialist, for an operation performed on appellant’s son, a minor. Appellant said he was absent in Sydney when the operation was performed at the suggestion of his sjon’s music teacher. He was not consulted,, and claimed to have repudiated liability when informed of the occurrence. Counsel for respondent said that appellant was a sitcccessful book-maker, who admitted making four thousand a year out of an illegal profession. His Honour; —The police don’t seem to he paying him much attention. Counsel contended that the . appellant had not formally repudiated repudiated responsibility, and that under the circumstances he should he compelled to- pay. This Honour said the appellant’s action was extraordinary and shabby. He should have paid the account. The case, however, must be decided on legal grounds. The appeal was allowed, with costs three guineas.
A LAD’S DEATH. DUNEDIN, This Day School boy, son of W. R. Brugh, solicitor, was found unconscious in a hath at tor .was found ‘unconscious in a bath at his father’s residence late last night, and died at 2 a.in., to-day. THE POSTAL PLEDGE. BLENHEIM, Nov 22. The Committee of Marlborough Branch and the Post and Telegraph Association passed the following resolution,— Tlip branch emphatically protests at any evasion on the part of Government, of the pledge given by the lata Finance Minister in respect to the bonus, in view of the fact that the officers accepted the assurance in good faith; also that the necessity that then existed, has been further accentuated by the iucreased cost of living, without a corresponding relief in the scale of salaries. fire at feilding. FEILDING, Nov. 23. The Denbigh 'Hotel building was seriously. damaged by fire to-day, a little after 2 p.m, The flames were discovered in the staff’s quarters upstairs at the end of one wing, and the brigade had to light for one hour to get control. One side of the building was practically, gutted on the upstairs portion. and the ground floor furnishings etc., were ruined by water. The damage is hard to estimate at present but possibly totals £3,000. Both the buildings and stock; were' insured, but particulars are not available. The occupied is W. P. Hook, and the licensee H. R. Wallace, The latter had only been there about two months. The fire was unfortunate for him as he had every room booked for the racing season next week. The Hon. Mr Guthrie’s Secretary,: stayed at the hotel and he was using a room for Lands Department work, but, though he lost private belongings, like many others, no State documents were destroyed. ..
