[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —OOPYEIGITT.j PATEA SEAT. HAWERA, Oct. 24.

Mr W. Morrison, the Liberal candidate for the Patea seat, addressed a meeting- at Hawera last night. Although standing as a Liberal, Mr Morrison said he did not favour party politics. He favoured an elective executive. He dealt with the formation of the Coalition, and defended Sir Joseph' Ward’s withdrawal from it. He main, tained that soldiers should be settled on small areas of the best land. The people who had aggregated land were Reform -supporters. He favoured the present education system, with greater facilities in the country districts. He critcised the railway management, and supported nationalisation of the mines. He believed in the present system of Territorial training with some modifications. He dealt with war taxation considering that producers should pay the largest share. Ho did not favour tlie Government controlling arterial roads and said that the State should build houses for the people. There were no questions. The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks. supreme court. TIMARU, October 29. At the Supreme Court to-day George P-carcy Shirley was found guilty of failing to account for goods sent to him at Wiamate by Clarke and Co., of Wellington, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
