PRISONERS ESCAPE'. INVERCARGILL, October 14. This morning two prisoners, Laur once Egmonfc Windson, and' Oswald Har ris, bolted from the Morstal Institute gang at Otatara, and readied a neiirbi I* bush. An unsuccessful- search for the escapees was prosecuted all day. i WAIN AIT VALLEY RAGEDY. BLENHEIM', October 14, The Coroner at the inquest on the Wainm Valley tragedy found that deceased, George O’Leary; died of acute dilation of‘the-heart, accelerated by a blow struck at the deceased by Charles Albert gasse. The Coroner added that in view of* the probabilities of further proceedings, it was not advisable for him to say anything further at the present stage. . BAPTIST CONFERENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 14. At the Baptist Conference to-day the following resolution was carried: ‘That the Baptist Union of New Zealand regards with apprehension the growth of gambling in this community. It looks on last years’ totalisator investments, exceeding £5,000,000 as nothing other than a public reproach. The Union notices that attempts are being made to enlarge the facilities for totalisator gambling by increasing the race days, and by legalising telegraphic investments on the machines.
The Union believes that the attempt ought to be resisted, and steps ought everywhere to ibe taken to restrict totalisator gambling. The Union also calls on the Government to fulfil the intentions of tlio existing legislation by refusing to allow betting telegrams to go through the telegraph offices and to put all legal machinery in operation against tho bookmakers.
A MISSING (BOY. TAUMARANUI, This Day. Tho seven-year-old boy of Brightwell, reported missing last night, was last seen in tho afternoon going to his home across the Wanganui river. The boy had fo cross on a swing-bridge to Winter’s Island, and by Sinclair’s bridge from tlie Island on the other side of the river. A parcel carried by the boy was found to-day on the Island. There is no further trace. The police are searching.
