SOPWITH MACHINE. TO FLY TO. AUSTRALIA. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) LONDON October 13. The Sopwith aeroplane Ullaby, which Matthews is using on a flight to Australia is similar to the machine used by Hawker for his trans-Atlantic flight .but stronger, in view of the possible rough landings. The strengthening of the machine, however, does not make any dicerence ,in the speed. Its maximum speed is 121 miles per hour and lowest forty-eight. Its cruising speed at an altitude of five thousand feet, is 117 miles hourly, on fifteen gallons of petrol. The machine can be flown either as an ,open or enclosed well ventilated, lamousine as the weather dictates. Complete dual control is provided, so that either pilot or observer can fly the machine. Provision is made for the carrying of smoke bombs, to enable the aviators to estimate 1 the amount of drift. Matthews has devised special instruments to correct compasses The exhaust from the engines is carried well aft, to diminish the noise. Tlie machine is able to carry eight persons and is also adapted for the carriage of mails.
