SOUTH WESTLAND NOTES.
(From a Correspondent.)
At a meeting held at Matainui on the Bth inst., it was decided to hold a social dance in honour of the returned soldiers of the Wataroa district. The function has been fixed for the 24th inst., and all returned men are invited to attend. Ten of their number from the district will be recipients of presentations.
The Wataroa Hall trustees have conveyed their thanks to the Waiho Gorge settlers and others for an acceptable donation of £9 13s towards defraying the cost of a piano for the hall. Mr O’Brien, the Labour Candidate for Westland, passed south on Wednesday, and is going as far as Okuru. He is to speak at several centres when returning north. A circular from Mr J. D. Lynch, the Independent candidate, is being received in the south, which suggests that the Westland seat is being eagerly sought after.
Butler’s Creek at Matanui is causing considerable damage by its overflow. The matter is in the hands of the Public Works Department, and a visit has been promised for some time from the Resident Engineer. The visit will be welcomed as the creek is doing cojisilorable damage, and its control is an urgent necessity.
