THE BLENHEIM RAILWAY. CHRISTCHURCH, August 15.
A deputation from the South Island Main Trunk League waited on the Chamber of Commerce to-day, and re- : quested its assistance in impressing on J the Government the necessity of tho j early completion of the South Island | Trunk Line. The Reputation urged that fho Government should borrow ten millions to complete- the existing lines and pointed out that the railway [between ChiUstoh.urch and Blenheim would give a fillip to settlement, and would result in increased production, which was urgently needed in view of the Dominion’s financal burden. The Chamber promised to give every asssitance in its power to further the request of the League.
MEAT EXPORT QUESTION. WELLINGTON, August 15.
In replying to a meat producers deputation to-day, Sir Joseph Ward said that there was no foundation for the report that the meat stores in the United Kingdom-were full of meat.
lie exressed astonishment that the Imperial authorities had not permitted the publication of a report of the Inperial meat transactions last year. He said the reports and documents laid before the Imperial Conference would tell producers all they sought to know The delegates, he said, had drawn out the fact that a profit of threepence per pound was being made on the transfer of New Zealand meat from one British department to another. Mr Massey and himself had made a very strong protest regarding this profit, which was being used to balance the very high prices the Imperial Government was paying for American meat. When the present contract with the Imperial Government expired, said Sir Joseph, the producers and exporters, if they could get freedom, and enough ships to carry on their own business, under competitive conditions, would be better off than they would be under a Government restriction. They would be able to get better prices 'than they would get under the commandeer system. He would not be surprised if the British Government had to make a higher offer for New Zealand meat _ in order to bridge over the period, before normal conditions could be restored. ' ,
