IN HUNGARY.

(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (AUSXKALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION]

THE POSITION IN HUNGARY. (Received This Day at 'J. A3 a.m.) LONDON, August 8,

The sudden reappearance of the representatve of the discredited Hapsburgs as the virtual Government of Hungary is regarded with strong suspicion and misgiving in England and Frace. The “Times” suggests the Entente’s Mission in Budapestli had a share in the reactionary intrigue, which has been developing for several months. The Allies are gravely stultifying themselves by delegating authority to the •Archduke, while claiming to act in accordance with democratic principles. The “Westminster Gazette” says the Allies ought to insist on the Archduke immediately convening the Constituent Assembly, to see whether the people want him.

French newspapers make similar demands. They strongly suspect the Archduke’s aims.

The “Figaro” says Joseph and his Generals are Maygars, the sworn enemies of France.

HUNGARY’S DICTATOR. (Received This Ray at noon.) PARIS, Aug. 9

Archduke Joseph offers to send t.vo Hungarian delegates to the Peace Conference. The Supreme Council considers the offer on Monday. It is not expected they will accept, until sure that the new" Government represents the people, and affords some hope of stability. Joseph, in a letter to M. Clemepceau, states his programme is the destruction of Bolsheism, and restore-' tion of order. He intends to hasten the elections immediately and afterwards call the National Assembly. He asks for the Allies benevolent support.

REPORTED ASSASSINATION. (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.l BERNE Aug. 9'.
