THE GOVERNMENT BOOTS.
arrangements GOTNG ON
The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, President of the Board of Trade, informed a reporter that now .that the conference Held sonic days ago had satisfactorily dealt with the price of hides, it remained with the Board of Trade to fix the prices first of leather, and then of the standardised boots shortly to be put on the market. He said that the Board of Trade was going into these matters now, and as soon as they were settled ho hoped that the boot manufacturers would be able to go on witb the production of standardised boots. Tlk( prices, be anticipated, would not be so much lower than the present retail prices as perhaps people might expect, but the quality of the boots would be guaranteed and would be much superior to that of hoots now being offered at similar prices. There would be no opportunity of profiteering in these boots, for every pair would bo stamped with a Gvernment stamp on' the sole and stamped also with the retail price. So that every purchaser would know at once the price ho ought to pay for them.
