DEAN CAREW MEMORIAL BAZAAR

The Bazaar at Greymouth in aid of the Bean Carew Memorial was brought to a close on Saturday evening, the results far exceeding all expectations. The Town Hall was thronged throughout the evening, until nearly midnight. During the evening the winner of the girls’ singing competition, Miss Doreen O’Hallahan, was loudly applauded for a song which she contributed. As the time drew hear for the final count in the Queen’s contest, excitement waxed very keen, and a great crowd waited for the final result.

About 11.30 o’clock, Bov. Father Quinn, who was given an ovation, mounted the stage and announced the result. Before doing so he . said ho would take the opportunity of returning thanks to the various stall-holders and their able assistants, and to all those who in any way assisted to'make the'Bazaar such a magnificent success. Ho specially mentioned Misses T. Bourke, C. Heapliy, and T. Campbell of the winning stall, and. said every worker had reason to be highly pleased with the particular and general results. Father Quinn then announced the Carnival results as follow:

No, 4 Stall (New Zealand) Maureen Bebahj 102,300 votes £1275 No. 2 Stall (Children of Mary) Mamie Newman, (19,760 votes 872 No. 3 Stall (Empire) Kathleen Higgins, 68,880 votes 861 No. 1 Stall (America) Marjorie Egden, 30,000 votes 375

til addition to the above, Father Quinn stated there was a sum of between £IOO and £SOO from the general fund, making the grand total proceeds from the Bazaar upwards of £3,800. There are still solne further amounts likely to come to hand. On the results being made known, the vast audience gave vent to their feelings in (tremendous outbursts of applause, which, lasted for several minutes. The date for the Coronation Ceremony has not yet been definitely fixed, but will be announced later. The results of the drawings of prizes and awards will bo published within the next few days. THE TOTAL FUND. The net proceeds of the Bazaar with close on £IOOO already in hand will result in approximately a sum of £4600 being available for the initiation of the work of erecting a school as a memorial to the late Dean Carew.

The result of tlie Bazaar has proved far beyond the Committee’s most sanguine expectations, and reflects the greatest credit on the, organisation, the figure obtained being seldom equalled, even in the larger centres.
