REBUILDING FRANCE.
London, Jan 15 The rebuilding; of the devastated area of France has already begun 1 An important part, of the work is beiug carried out by Mr W. G. Tarrant, of By fleet, Surrey. A large number of British workmen have been sent across to supervise the work, which includes the rebuilding of almost entire villages, the erection of parochial churches, and restoration of burial grounds. Mr Tarrant is also urging the adoption of a scheme for the development of cottage and house properly in England. To a Daily Mail representative he suggested that special facilities shonld be given to returning soldiers to build their own cottages.
“ Give them financial assistance free of interest f..r live years and let the cottages they build be rate free for 21 years,” said Mr Tarrant. “ Why not also give power to local council to develop land bought by them and sell it at public auction with a reserve sufficient to guard them from loss ? One of the greatest difficulties in land development is the uncertain time an owner lias to bold liis roads after lie lias made them before they are taken over by councils.”
