WESTLAND ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
An ordinary meeting of the above Society was held at the County Chambers last evening. Present:—Mr D. J. Evans (voted to the chair), Messrs G-. 13. D. Seale, A. B. King, A- B. Boyd, and Jas. King (Hon. Secretary). A vote of sympathy with the members of the family of the late A. N. Harrop a former member was passed. Apologies for absence were received from Dr Teiclielmann (President), arid Messrs Braddon and Lloyd. C. Hodgskinson, ranger, recommended ’die killing of the hinds in the Wills Valley of the Haast ; where the deer were becoming too numerous and there was a probability of the herd being spoiled.—Received; and enquiry’ to ho made as to cost. The Chairman recommended that the licensed stalkers should be allowed to take more than two deer in a season.
It was resolved to vote £5- to the West Coast booklet now being prepared by Mr Will Lawson; also to issue on behalf of the Society a pictorial booklet advertising the beauties of the district. The Secretary reported that previous supplies of booklets held by the Society had been disposed of profitably and were now out of print. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Braddon for taking charge of the shipping operations at Lake Brunner, where a large amount of ova was obtained. The sale of a quantity of fry to the Grey Society was confirmed; and the action in retaining all yearlings for Westland streams was approved.
Reports were received of the illicit taking of game in the Lake Kanieri and Arahura- districts and it was resolved to notify the authorities. Notice was received also of a practice adopted by some motorists in various parts of the Dominion of using explosives in remote streams to take trout and other fish Tt was resolved to co-operate in the suggestion made to endeavour to stop this practice. Notification was received of the intention to hold a meeting in Christ, church in May to constitute a South Island Acclimatisation Society. It was resolved to defer consideration til! next meeting. The Society’s caretaker at Kanieri Lake reported on past operations, and receipts from launch.—Received as satisfactory.
