) One of the chaplains who addressed | .the Presbyterian General Assembly last } week was responsible for its members — | both ministers and elders—indulging |in unrestrained laughter in which the 1 Moderator was unable to refrain • from 3 joining. The chaplain was telling how § the soldiers in Palestine showed interJ ost in ancient sacred relics, and narrat!l cd that a guide, pointing to an eastern lamp told a party of men that the, lamp ij bad been burning continuously for eight jj hundred years. “It will damn well |i burn no longer,” an Australian soldier | had-said, at the same time extinguishj! ing the sacred flame. The use of the trooper’s actual language took the Asjj sombly so much by surprise that mem- \ hers simply “let themselves go.” This 1 paved the way for another story, the j point of which was another outspoken ; remark. The padre had been talking i about Samson’s feat with the gates of ;• Gaza, and after the talk a soldier came 1 along to him and after referring to tlio ’ gate story be remarked: “Good God, ; padre, you don’t expect us to swallow : that!”
