A THRILLING CONTEST. STRATFORD, February 14. The Hawera Stakes of 1919, will be memorable in the history of the Eginout Club. It was a great struggle for supremacy between two great horses The conditions were altogether favourable to a real trial of strength and nothing occurred to interfere in anj •vay with a fair and decisive test over a distance. Gloaming was first to enter the birdcage, and looked in perfect condition. Desert Gold filled the eye well, and seemed better for the races she has lately run; the only other starter, Birkenvale was quite outclassed. Gray on Desert Gold drew the inside and Dceley on Gloaming second place from the rails. From an even start Gloaming was quickest to begin and Dceley took the rails making the pace a cracker. For four furlongs Gloaming led Desert Gold by half a length, and then Dceley appeared to shake up the gelding, and he instantly responded gaining another half length. Gray moved on the mare, and ranged alongside and together the two horses turned into the straight. A fine struggle ensued Gloaming gradually forging ahead, ancl passing the post two lengths el opr of the mare with something in hand, amidst tremendous applause. On returning to the paddock both horses and riders received a great ovation The official time was 1.40 2-5, but private watches made it 1.40, and with Hie dead state of the track after the rain good judges consider this equal to 1 37 at Christchurch or Wellington. Gloaming and Desert Gold were pretty cvenlv backed on the machine while a fair number bravely supported Birkenvale. On the day the best horse undoubtedly won a true run race.
