THE SHIPPING POSITION.
The Sydney Sun’s London representative cabled the following message recently : A large increase in the tonnage of shipping for Australia is already recorded. Seven steamers recently departed, 27 more are to sail from Britain before the end of the year, and about 20 more will leave shortly afterwards. The. Shipping Controller released specially for Australian exports 25 vessels which arc considered to he somewhat unsuitable for the Atlantic winter. Eiirlv sailings include the Argyllshire (12,000 tons), Miltiades (7800 tons), Zealandic (8000 tons), Euripides (1-5,000 tons). Orontes (0000 tons), and others well known in Australian waters. .December will see very heavy despatches towards Australia. Freights have been reduced 25 per cent., and there will be a further reduction shortly. Twentyone vessels will load in Australia, in March, mostly wool, grain, and meat, closely approximating to pre-war shipments.
