Russell with the view of securing a curtailment of the hours of the work on Christmas Eve. Mr Martin pointed out that the majority of assistants had not properly recovered from the effects of the influenza, and were not, therefore, in a fit state to stand the strain of tho extra hours. The Minister’s attention was also drawn to the fact that, though the embargo bad been removed from hotels, they had been warned against allowing loitering or crowding of bars, which were compelled to close at 6 p.m. The picture theatres were only allowed to open at certain hours, and the shop assistants were compelled to work in crowded shops without, ,in many instances, proper ventilation. The Minister promised Mr Martin that he would wire to the Chief Health Officer on Tuesday, asking him to obtain the opinion of the Crown Law Department as to the legal position with regard to having • all retail shops throughout New Zealand closed at 9 p.m. on Christmas Evo.
