ALLIED OCCUPATION.
fAUSTRALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION]
ALLIES ENTRY TO GERMANY. LONDON, Dec. 4. A war correspondent gives a remarkable description of the entry of the Allies into Germany. He says; “It is a curious feeling to be going through villages where, supposedly every person hatos and curses you. The houses are all closed and silent. Behind drawn curtains white faces stare. Thoro is desolation and silence. This is a marked contrast to the triumphant processions, overjoyed populations, and beflagged and decorated streets of eastern France. “When nearing Malmady, we saw the first German groups. The men saluted by taking off their hats, as the increasing stream of cavalry, transport, and artillery flowed by, leaving the Germans under no illusions regarding the fitness and power of the British
Army. “No German troops were visible. Order was kept by now Town Guards, consisting of revolutionary soldiers, who left their regiments, giving up their arms. They are wearing civilian clothes and white armlets. “In the streets there are placarded notices, signed by the burgomaster, urging the population to keep order, and to bear themselves with dignity and worthiness.”
ORDER TO BRITISH ARMY
LONDON, Dec. 4
A general order has been issued to the British Army of Occupation in Germany. It says: “Intercourse with the inhabitants of Germany must be confined to what is essential, and must be marked by courtesy and restraint. It would be unseemly that anything approaching familiarity should be allowed to enter into the relations of the British soldiers and the men and women of the German nation. Reparation and compensation from the German people ate matters for the appointed authorities to take care of.
FRENCH GOING TO MAYENCE. LONDON, Dec. L
The Tenth French Army is on its way to Mayenco and has crossed the German frontier of 1870, occupying the Valley of the Seine.
