CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD

At tho monthly meeting on Wednesday last at Christchurch the following Westland matters were dealt with: The Chief Instructor in Agriculture reported—lt will be necessary to purchase some material for the School of Dairy Science on the West Coast to supplement- what I may be able to borrow locally. I ask permission to purchase this.—Approved. The Assistant Agricultural Instructor reported:—The Teachers’ Saturday class in Agriculture finished last Saturday. I propose to give those teachers sitting for Certificate examination a little more practical work and so the class will continue for a limited number (about 14) for another fortnight or three weeks. The seeds arrived from Christchurch and were distributed to various schools. As this Spring has been very wot the school gardens are not looking as well as they should but the teachers are not to blame for this. I have been in communication with Mr Martin re the Dairy Science course and its promised success should fully justify the Board’s expenditure.—Received. The Senior Inspector reports that nt Cobdon excluding the gymnasium the floor space is more than 10 square feet per child, aud that if the school were remodelled it would provide sufficient accommodation for the present numbers but recommends that a larger site should be obtained before erecting any additions to, the school. —Agreed to. As result of the vote taken the residents of Hari Hari and La Fontaine school districts have decided in favour of the establishment of a central school to serve both districts.—lnspector Valentine and the Crown Lands Ranger are to visit and report on the best site for a suitable school. Messrs Butler and Co., are unable to offer a now site for the Wataroa school and the Westland County Council declined to grant use of gravel reserve— Resolved that Wataroa Committee be asked to suggest the best course for the Board to adopt and where any site is available.
