The report of the death of Scrgt. M. IJ. Malavey, killed in action on the lltli. inst, appears in this issue, the deceased will be remembered hero as the teller of the Bank of New Zealand being a very courteous and obliging officer. The young man made good as a soldier, and was highly -esteemed by all ranks. He did excellent work in camp and in England performed his work so well that he was retained in the instruction camps for a time as an instructor. He made many friends on the Coast who will regret to hear of his death. The business instincts of the Americans are well-known, and a good story of his connection was told by Mr C. H. Poole, M.P., during his address at tn« Y.M.C.A., Wellington upon' the war work of the United States. Some peo- ; pie, he said, had ventured the opinion ; that the Americans were ; a mercenary , people, too busy in the pursuit of ; wealth to be troubled Seriously about j tin- war.
