BUTTER AND CHEESE.

- IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT’S OFFER. WELLINGTON, October 28. The members of the Butter and Cheese Committee, representing the fac Lories and produers in the dairy industry, met the Prime Minister today, to discuss the‘offer made by the Imperial Government for this season s output of butter and cheese. The terms of the offer have not been announced officially, but it is understood that the prices proposed are 10i]d per lb for cheese, and 181 s. per cut for butter. It is stated that one of the conditions is that- the output shall not be more than 5 per cent in excess of lastyear’s output. The conference sat for three hours, and did not complete the arrangements The Prime Minister stated subsequently that the price to be paid for the cheese had been fixd but there were some points (reserved for discussion. With reference to the butter, lie would require to communicate again with the Imperial authorities. It is understood that the price offered for the cheese—lo]cl per lb—has been accepted, but the representatives of the produers arc desirous of getting something better’ than 181 s. per cwt for butter. They have mentioned

1965. per cwt (Is. 9d. per lb) as a price they consider fafr. The indications are that the big increase suggested by the producing interests will not be made.
