STRONG ALLIED PUSH GERMAN DEFENCE STIFFENS PEACE NOTE OPINIONS AN AMSTERDAM RUMOUR NEW ZEALAND CASUALTIES THE NEW SITUATION INTERNAL DISSENBION.—CHOOSING NEW DEFENSIVE LINE. f AUSTRALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] (Received This Day at 8.45 a.m.) London, October 22. The Daily Chronicle’s Amsterdam correspondent says the information from Germany shows that Lndendorf is playing a strong hand with considerable military support, and the threat of a'coup d’efat. Ludendorf has told the Government that the German army is carrying outanordeily retreat, and it cannot be the retreat of a beaten army. The n'few line will be a favourable position to influence events. Lndendorf and Hiudenburg are at variance. Hiiulenburg approves the peace move. Ludendorf who half-heartedly supported it, is now inclined to place everything at a hazard again. This attitude is supported by flaming appeals to various organisations from the Navy League to the Socialists and Trade Unions, all condemning peace at any price. There are indications that the Germans will consider the Antwerp to Metz line overlong, and likely to take up Liege-Namur-Montomedy-Metz position. Troops are continually arriving at Antwerp, en route to Liege.
